POLL TURNOUT: "Do you make music? (貴方は音楽を作るか?)"

-> "Yes.": 4 (33%)
-> "No, don't really want to.": 1 (8%)
-> "No, but I would like to.": 7 (58%)
-> "I used to, but not anymore.": 0 (0%)

Seems there're quite a few people who browse the blog that also make music of their own. You all deserve a brofist.

Now's when you post me links to samples of your stuff so I can listen to it.
I love discovering new music. I really, really do. To those of you who haven't attempted songwriting but would like to, get on it. You might find it to be one of the most fulfilling things you'll ever do.

Oh, I should take the moment to namedrop my own stuff, heh heh heh ...
Ripple'Field (synthpop/experimental electro)
Airs (shoegaze/post-rock/alt rock)

I'm also working on an album for a project that'll feature mixes of goth rock, post-punk and black metal, called Vuota. Here's a brief WIP track.

P∽L - アジアのシンボル (2002)

(PooL - ASIA no SYMBOL)

Genre: Alt Rock
Released: August 1st, 2002
Region: Japan
Label: Art Pop
Catalog #: APCRD-0202
Format: CD

tracklist
01. POOLISH
02. 信度 5
03. 白船
04. 色とりどりの答え
05. 揺ゆ狷
06. symbol

One of the most interesting alternative rock bands in visual kei, and by far one of the most underrated. I remember discovering these guys while I was scouring WinMX in late 2002 or so and falling completely in love.

Memorable riffs from タイト(who's known now as ケッチ in KYOKUTOU GIRL FRIEND) on guitar, fantastically unique, quirky and somewhat seductive vocals from singer シャカ(now in Miss Jelly Fish, and Acmahead before that) and you also have ティル from lab./LAB. THE BASEMENT on bass. He co-wrote one of the CD's best tracks(symbol) with シャカ. This CD was, unfortunately, the only thing they released that ever had more than 3 tracks.

One of my favorite indie visual kei albums and bands.

Trash Gang - I "CYGUARD" (1989)

Genre: Glam Metal
Released: September 25th, 1989
Region: Japan
Label: Polydor
Catalog #: HOOP-20346
Format: CD

tracklist
01. Shake Your Body
02. Feed Back
03. Nature's Child
04. D-Day
05. Only 17
06. It's Too Late
07. Can't Get It Enough
08. It's All Right
09. Under The Table
10. Groovy Night Times Go

Awesomely nostalgic 80's hair metal at its most defined. Not a genre I was ever that big into, but I enjoyed this album regardless. Not sure if these guys have done much in music since the 80's cause I can't find any record of newer releases of theirs.

Submitted to the blog by James S.. Thanks!

06. She is a star
07. Money Girl
08. Oh Darling
09. Slow Dancin'
10. 君のためにバラードを

Smooth, radio-friendly crooner pop from a singer/sometimes songwriter with a cool voice. Track 1 is easily one of my ABSOLUTE FAVORITE pop songs to come out of Japan from that decade. Infectious and classy.

Junichi Inagaki was pretty well-loved in Japan around the 80's and early 90's and he's put out some fantastic singles. This isn't his best, but it's great nonetheless and I recommend giving it a spin.

Second tape has another new track that made it to MUGENCORE and a different version of a song off Spiral Code and the Cerebral Ache tape, and the mini-CD features a remake of a song off that same tape.

emmurée - love letter (2002)

Genre: Goth Rock

Format: CD

tracklist
01. ラブレター
02. グロセックス
03. 絵空事の色彩
04. 瓶詰少女
05. 楽園

Easily one of the best goth rock releases that I've ever heard, Japanese or otherwise. These guys have been kicking for about a decade now and they've been consistently awesome since the beginning, but this(their very first non-demo, non-compilation release), IMO, is their crowning achievement.

Powerful, emotional, tormented vocals and a heavy focus on jangly guitar and bass. Absolutely breathtaking melodies and atmospheres.
Can't recommend these guys enough.

Bought this not knowing what I'd expect, got an eerie and beautiful experimental japanesey(with added middle-eastern flavor) folk album. Very minimalist, rarely more than 3 instruments being played at once(from what I can hear) and they're played in methodical, progressive, emotionally expressive ways. Fantastic background reflection music.

POLL TURNOUT: "Should I stick with 320 or go v0?"

So, people MOSTLY prefer v0, but the scores are pretty much completely even. From here on, I'll upload a 320kbps rip as well as a v0 rip for each post.

If anyone wants anything(that's already been posted) re-uploaded in v0, let me know in this post or in an email and I'll hook you up. Updating ALL the entries with a new link would take foreeeeeeeeever.

Miranda Sex Garden - Sunshine (1993)

Genre: Shoegaze/Experimental
Released: 1993
Region: London, England
Label: Mute
Catalog #: 12-MUTE 154
Format: 12" Single
Bitrate: 320 kbps

tracklist
A. Sunshine (Abrasion Mix)

B1. Muff Diving Size Queen
B2. Fear (Live)
B3. Willie Bidle In His Watery Grave

I literally bought this 12" for the cover and, when I heard the first track, I thought it was some really cool shoegaze/dreampop band I hadn't heard of. Then I heard the b-side and I realize now that I have NO idea what these guys were trying to do. They definitely stand-out, either way.

Anyways, I still love the title track and I'm gonna end up checkin' out their other stuff based on that.

Region: Indianapolis, IN/JP
Label: Decca/Victor
Catalog #: 18461/V-40256

Ink Spots tracklist
A. Ev'ry Night About This Time
B. I'm Not The Same Old Me

灰田/高峰 tracklist
A. わが夢わが歌
B. 銀座カンカン娘

Two 78s I snagged in Rasputin one day after finding their huuuuuuge 78s section. Only got two because I had to have it all shipped home and I was worried about them all shattering in shipment.

Three great artists from the 30's and 40's, Ink Spots being extremely well-known among enthusiasts and a well-respected pop/vocal/jazz/doo-wop group, but still underrated by pretty much everyone else, and Takamine was a fairly popular Japanese actor from the Showa period.

小堺一機 - Someone Like You-あなたに似た人- (1987)

(Kazuki Kosakai - Someone Like You-Anata ni Nitajin-)

Genre: Pop
Released: August, 1987
Region: Chiba, Japan
Label: FOR LIFE RECORDS
Catalog #: 28K-135
Format: 12" LP
Bitrate: 320 kbps

tracklist

This poppy little gem of a record was apparently the debut musical outing of Japanese comedian and talent "Kazuki Kosakai". Sort of ballroom-pop-ish stuff. I really love track 1 on side B, very smooth and loungey.

I haven't had the free time to spin it more than once yet, but old 80's pop records like these get the most downloads on this blog so I figured I'd post it here anyways and give it a more focused listen in the near future. :)

Visage - The Anvil (1982)

Genre: Synthpop/New Wave
Released: 1982
Region: London, England
Label: Polygram Records
Catalog #: POLD-5050
Format: 12" LP
Bitrate: 320 kbps

tracklist
A1. The Damned Don't Cry
A2. Anvil (Night Club School)
A3. Move Up
A4. Night Train
A5. The Horseman

B1. Look What They've Done
B2. Again We Love
B3. Wild Life
B4. Whispers

If you know "new romantic" synthpop music, you know Visage, and how depressingly underappreciated they are and were. If you don't know them and are interested in the genre, however, I HIGHLY suggest you try them out, and this album works great as a starting point.

They sound a lot like Pet Shop Boys and Duran Duran, as per the genre formula, but they have their own style/sound that sets them apart. Check 'em out!

Bitrate: 320 kbps

tracklist
A1. We Just Couldn't Say Goodbye
A2. Love Me Tonight
A3. Say It Isn't So
A4. You'll Always Be The Same Sweetheart

B3. Don't Blame Me
B4. It's The Talk Of The Town
B5. Give Me Liberty Or Give Me Love
B6. Sing A Little Low-Down Tune
B7. This Little Piggy Went To Market
B8. Let's Fall In Love

Easily one of the most criminally underrated jazz pop singers of the 30's and 40's, New York native Annette Hanshaw topped charts in her prime and then abruptly retired from music to live out the rest of her days in comfort with her family.

The day I first heard her voice(in a FANTASTIC song called "Daddy Won't You Please Come Home?" that I heard on the soundtrack for Bioshock 2) I fell instantly in love with her soft, mature tone, silky vibrato and charming personality, and I've been listening to her daily ever since. She put her own unique spin on every song she did, and when the differences weren't much stylistically her voice alone was enough to turn anything into gold.

This here is a compilation of many(but not all) of her very best singles and if you've ever planned on giving this kind of music a try, I can't recommend this little lady enough.

The Andrews Sisters - Near You (1957)

Genre: Pop/Jazz

tracklist
A1. Near You
A2. I Don't Know Why (I Just Do)
A3. Sing A Tropical Song
A4. Daddy
A5. I Love You Much Too Much
A6. She Wore A Yellow Ribbon

B1. A Bushel And A Peck
B2. How Lucky You Are
B3. Carmen's Boogie
B4. One For The Wonder
B5. The Blonde Sailor
B6. Charley My Boy

If you like old vocal pop and don't know the Andrews Sisters, you're really missing out. These girls were notorious for their upbeat, quirky, infectious pop tunes and friendly personalities. They collaborated with a lot of popular singers of the time, such as Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye.

I'm not sure if this is an official full length of theirs or a compilation, but either way, it's a wonderful listen if you're into this kinda stuff.

tracklist
A. Crime Scene

B1. Girl On Fire
B2. No Love In Your Punches

Underrated indie band from Brooklyn. Found this lying in a discount bin and snatched it up and thoroughly enjoyed listening to it. Sounds a lot like Bloc Party or The Departure or other such brit-rock type groups, lots of energy.

07. 目苦看田
08. 邏田
09. 後生,打幫
10. 分美濃介情歌

A friend of mine from Taiwan sent me stuff by this guy many years ago and I dug it, so I was pretty stoked to find a CD of his at Amoeba. Quality traditional-values-and-the-preservation-of-nature-and-home kind of acoustic folk pop, but with an east asian twist. Relaxing and enjoyable.

Genre: Hardcore/Punk
Released: 2002
Region: USA
Label: Unsigned
Catalog #: ITWOTP1
Format: 7"
Bitrate: 320 kbps

tracklist
A1. In The Wake Of The Plague
A2. Ritual Suicide

B1. The Acrid Smoke Of Rain
B2. Beaten Down By Failure
B3. End Transmission

Here's a 7" I glanced over in the discount section of Amoeba that turned out to be pretty damn cool. They have very few listeners on Last.fm and very little anything on the net references them in any way, and that's rather unfortunate.

Genre: Experimental/Industrial
Released: 1986

tracklist
A1. Drive
A2. 13
A3. M.S.
A4. Slave

B1. Endage
B2. Bloodletting
B3. Betrayal
B4. Departure

Stumbled on this in a local shop and picked it up because the cover intrigued me. It sounds a bit like Killing Joke at their youngest, but rawer and with less regard for song structure. Low grinding sounds and lots of amelodic shouting coupled with atmospheric electronic elements.

B4. 安兵衛ぶし

B6. ?
B7. 男ひとたび

Found this compilation of early-Showa era pop vocalist Bin Uehara in a record store in CA. No matter what I use, I can't find a speck of reference or information on this specific release anywhere on the internet, so I can't get a thorough tracklist to put up here, nor a proper date of release.

I barely got the title of the record right. I'm terrible with kanji so I can't figure it out myself(If anyone's really curious and willing to help, I can send scans of the jacket and/or sleeve.)

Anyways, this 12" is loaded with old pre- and post-war Japanese folk pop tunes, mostly upbeat, but with some ballads here and there. A really great record for people into music from that era, the guy had a great voice.

I bought a few pre-50's 45s and 78s on vacation, and since they're such small uploads I figured I'd up a few of them in bulk. Here are two 45s by three not-so-underrated American artists for their time, and one not-so-underrated Japanese artist for her time and in her native land, but I feel like music from 1900-1948 has grown almost completely forgotten over the years and it neeeeeds greater appreciation.

Following this blog you'll realize I've got a soft spot for pop music, especially 80's pop, and if it's from Japan that tends to be an even bigger plus. This CD's a good example of 80's idol pop from Japan. Infectious, catchy melodies in mid-tempo chart toppers.

I haven't heard anything she released after this, but I've seen her in the top 20 portion of a top 50 list of best-selling Japanese artists of all time, so she must be well-loved over there. She's underrated in the west, though! ;)
